Wall Desk

Four steps, about forty minutes, one hex key that is already in the box. Read each step through before you start it. Nothing here is difficult and every fixing can be undone, but the order matters more than the speed.

Step 01  ·  Six minutes

Sort the hardware

Tip the fittings bag onto a towel and count everything before you open the panel cartons. Two minutes of counting now is the difference between finishing this morning and driving to a hardware shop this afternoon.

  • 8 ×M6 cam bolt, 35 mm — short thread, flat head
  • 8 ×Cam disc, 15 mm — arrow stamped on the face
  • 4 ×Wall anchor, 8 mm — red sleeve, brick and block
  • 4 ×Coach screw, 60 mm — hex head
  • 2 ×Side bracket, cast alloy — left and right are identical
  • 1 ×Wall rail, 1180 mm — slotted face points up
  • 1 ×Desktop, 1200 × 500 mm — pre-drilled underside

Bolts and discs come as matched pairs. Keep the discs bagged until step 04 — they roll off a table and hide under skirting boards.

Step 02  ·  Nine minutes

Fix the side brackets

Both brackets are identical, so there is no left or right to get wrong. Work on the floor with the desktop face down on its wrap, not balanced on a chair.

  1. Lay the desktop face down on its own wrapping. The pre-drilled holes face you.
  2. Push the two 8 mm dowels into the bracket by hand until they stop. No glue, no hammer.
  3. Seat the bracket flush to the edge and start both cam bolts by hand for two full turns.
  4. Tighten with the hex key: firm, not forced. Stop about a quarter turn after the head meets the alloy.
  5. Repeat at the far end, then check both brackets sit square with the level laid across them.

If a bolt fights you, back it out completely and start again. A crossed thread in chipboard cannot be repaired, and it never begins tight.

Dowels carry the shear load, cam bolts only pull the joint closed. Both dowels must bottom out before you tighten anything.

Step 03  ·  Fourteen minutes  ·  Two people

Level and anchor the rail

This is the only step that decides whether the desk looks right, so take the extra minute. Mark the line first, hold the rail to the line second, drill last.

  1. Mark 720 mm from the finished floor at both ends of the run. That is desk height less the top.
  2. Join the marks, then check the line with the level rather than trusting the floor. Floors are rarely flat.
  3. Hold the rail to the line, mark the four slots, and drill 8 mm to a depth of 55 mm.
  4. Tap the anchors flush, hang the rail, and run the coach screws in until the rail stops moving.
  5. Level again before the final quarter turn. The slots give you 4 mm of adjustment in either direction.

Two people: one holds, one marks. Scan for cables and pipes before the drill touches the wall — a detector costs less than an afternoon of rewiring.

Step 04  ·  Seven minutes

Seat the top, lock the cams

The last step is the quietest one. Lower the top onto the rail, then close each cam with a single half turn clockwise. The joint pulls itself tight; you are not the one applying the force.

  1. Lower the desktop so the brackets hook over the rail and slide it back until it touches the wall.
  2. Drop a cam disc into each hole with the arrow pointing at the bolt.
  3. Turn each disc a half turn clockwise with the cam key or a coin. You will feel it grab, then stop.
  4. Work outward from the middle, not end to end, so the top settles evenly.
  5. Press down firmly on both corners. No movement, no creak: the desk is finished.

A cam that spins freely has its arrow the wrong way round. Turn it back, lift the disc, rotate it 180 degrees and try again.

Half a turn is the whole travel. Past that the disc is fighting itself and the chipboard gives before the alloy does.

Step 05  ·  Finished

That is the whole desk

Give the top a firm push down at each corner. If nothing moves and nothing creaks, the cams are home and you are done. Leave the wrapping under it for an hour while the anchors settle.
